PDB eBook Format

PDB Converter

The PDB format name is short for Palm Desktop Database. Palm was a popular personal desktop assistant (PDA) brand from the mid-1990s up until 2011. PDAs like Palm and BlackBerry were a precursor to smartphones. There were several programs on Palm devices which used the PDB format, including word processors, database or spreadsheet applications, and the Palm ereaders. You can find out what type of program a PDB was created with by opening the file in a text editor.

As smartphones have now replaced PDAs, people tend to use these or a separate ereader for reading ebooks. The PDB format also didn’t have digital rights management (DRM) for authors and publishers to copy-protect their work. While Palm devices are no longer being sold, you can still get the Palm Desktop application for Windows. Other ways of viewing PDB files include with Calibre’s ereader software, or with the XnViewMP graphics application.

The MOBI ebook format was developed by the French company Mobipocket in 2000. MOBI files were intended to be used on mobile phones, computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs), which were popular in the 1990s and early 2000s before the arrival of smartphones. Unlike EPUB files, MOBI files were protected by Digital Rights Management, making it harder for the contents to be copied and shared.

Amazon bought Mobipocket in 2005. The company retired the MOBI format and support for it in 2016 after developing the AZW and AZW3 formats for the Kindle. However, you can still read MOBI files on Kindle devices and with the Calibre ebook application. You can also get specific MOBI-reader software. If you use an ereader that doesn’t recognise MOBI files, you may need to use a tool like Zamzar to convert them into another format like EPUB.
