ODS Document Format

ODS Converter

ODS stands for OpenDocument Spreadsheet file. This file format was developed by OASIS, and the files are created within a spreadsheet program called Calc. Like other spreadsheet formats, ODS enables you to sort and save data into tables, cells and rows. It can be used to track projects, manage budgets, generate complex mathematical formulae and charts, and has the ability to format custom elements including text and fonts, background colour, rows and columns. Additionally, ODS files are able to store macros, which allow users to automate complex tasks like data formatting and calculations.

The ODS format is an alternative to Microsoft’s Excel or Apple’s Number spreadsheet formats, and ODS files can be created for free using the Apache OpenOffice or LibreOffice open-source software, which both include the Calc application. Due to the popularity and non-proprietary use of the ODS format, these files can be opened with many spreadsheet program, such as LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Microsoft Excel, and Google Sheets.

XLS Document Format

XLS Converter

The XLS file format was developed by Microsoft for its Excel spreadsheet program. XLS is a binary spreadsheet format that can include cell data and formulas, as well as charts and macros. Excel is one of the most popular software programs for recording, organising, calculating and analysing data. It’s often used for budgeting and reporting.

Microsoft introduced the new XLSX format for Excel in 2007, to replace XLS. However, you can still open XLS files in newer versions of Excel, as well as saving XLSX files into this older format. Excel is part of Microsoft’s Office suite, which is available as a one-off software purchase or an Office 365 subscription. Other spreadsheet programs that can usually open XLS files include Google Sheets, Apple Numbers and LibreOffice Calc.

You can change an ODS file to XLS using an online conversion service like Zamzar, or with spreadsheet applications like OpenOffice Calc or Microsoft Excel. With Zamzar’s web-based converter, you can upload your ODS file and download your converted XLS file in seconds. The service is free, easy to use and you won’t need to download any software.

If you have access to a spreadsheet application, then you could also open your ODS file with that software, and then export it as an XLS file. With some applications, however, this may alter the formatting of the file.

You can open an ODS file in Excel either by opening it directly in Microsoft Excel, or by first converting it to XLS format using a conversion tool such as Zamzar. To open the file directly with Excel, open the application and then click ‘File’, then ‘Open’, and select your ODS file from the location you’ve saved it to on your computer. Your file will then open in Excel, but may lose some formatting.
Alternatively, use Zamzar to first convert your file to XLS format. Simply upload your file, select your ‘Convert To’ option, and download the converted file. You’ll then be able to open that XLS file in Excel.

You can open an OpenOffice spreadsheet in Excel either directly or by first converting the file to XLS format using a conversion tool. To open your OpenOffice spreadsheet directly in Excel, launch the software and click ‘File’, ‘Open’, and then browse your device for the ODS file you want to open. Note that the opened file may have lost some of the original formatting.
Another option is to use Zamzar to first convert your file to XLS format, and then open this in Excel. Zamzar’s online conversion tool lets you convert your file easily and for free in three quick steps.

You can open an ODS file using programmes such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice, or by converting it to a more accessible format using a conversion tool like Zamzar. To use Google Sheets, first upload your ODS file to Google Drive. Once uploaded, right-click the ODS file and select ‘Open with Google Sheets’.

You can easily convert your OpenOffice spreadsheet using an online converter like the one on Zamzar’s website. With Zamzar’s free conversion tool, you can upload your ODS file, select XLS or XLSX as the format you’d like to convert to, and then download the converted file to your device.

Alternatively, you could open your OpenOffice spreadsheet in Excel, and then save it as an XLS file. You may lose some formatting this way, though, and you would need to manually open and save each file individually.
