WMA Audio Format

WMA Converter

The full name for the WMA format is Windows Media Audio. As the name suggests, it’s an audio format specifically for Windows devices. Microsoft introduced WMA files in 1999 following the popularity of the MP3 format, and two years after the launch of the AAC format for digital music. However, WMA is not as widely used as these two formats.

WMA files generally use lossy compression to make the files smaller. This can mean the audio quality isn’t as high as with some other formats, although lossless versions of WMA are possible if you install newer codecs. Because WMA is a proprietary format, it’s not always compatible with non-Microsoft players or operating systems. However, you can play WMA files with Windows Media Player, Nullsoft Winamp, MPlayer and VLC. You can also use some of these programs, or online tools like Zamzar, to convert WMA files into formats like MP3 or AAC.

MP3 Audio Format

MP3 Converter

MP3 is the most common format for storing and playing digital music. It’s short for ‘MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3’, and it was developed in the early 1990s as a way of compressing audio to create smaller files that could be easily shared and stored without losing too much sound quality.

MP3 is a universal format maintained by the International Office for Standardization (ISO). MP3 tracks will play on almost any device and with most media players, including Windows Media Player and Apple Music. Digital music took off in the 1990s and 2000s, and many users used media players to ‘rip’ CDs, or download tracks from sites like Napster, turning MP3 into the most common audio format. Because MP3 uses ‘lossy’ compression that can’t be reversed, some music listeners prefer to use other formats such as FLAC, even if the file sizes are bigger.

Frequently asked questions

If you've got any questions about converting or compressing files with Zamzar, we're happy to help! We've answered a few commonly-asked questions below, to get you started, and you can find out more information about file conversion and compression with Zamzar, in our Help centre.

The easiest way is to use an online conversion tool, like Zamzar, as then you don't need to download any software. The conversion happens in real time, and you can convert more than one WMA file at once, should you need to.

WMA files tend to be opened using Windows Media Player, but can also be played using multi-platform players, such as the VideoLAN VLC media player, MPlayer or AllPlayer. If you don't have access to any of these media players, then you can convert your WMA file to an MP3, which is more universally supported.

Yes, Windows Media player allows this under a setting called 'Rip Music'. Open Windows Media Player and open the WMA file that needs be converted. Then, select the 'Organise' option on the top bar, and click 'Options', followed by 'Rip Music'. You can choose where you save the file to and, once you've done that, you simply need to select 'MP3' in the 'Format' section, under 'Rip settings'. When complete, click 'Apply', followed by 'Ok'.

Most WMA files are lossy, which means the type of compression used will result in some loss to the overall quality of the file. Lossless WMA files do exist, but these are rare.
